   Types of advocacy

Individual Advocacy

Advocacy workers are employed to support a number of people around the issues that are important to them. Their role is to speak up for individuals and represent them in relation to other agencies. The advocate supports a person until their issues have been resolved.

Collective Group Advocacy

Collective advocacy is when individuals come together to discuss issues of common concern. The group can support each other to pursue these issues and this can include campaigning. There is often an advocacy worker who provides practical support to the group.

Self Advocacy

This activity is common to all of the above and describes a situation when people are speaking up for themselves. All advocates support people to gain the skills to express their own views and interests. Therefore, they aim to eliminate the need for advocacy!
